ChatGPT Free Just Went Unlimited for Text (Aug 2026) — Here's What's Still Capped

As of August 6, 2026, ChatGPT free and Go accounts have no rate limit on text-only prompts — but files, images, voice mode, and image generation are still capped, and free users still get routed to a smaller model after heavy use. When you hit those walls, ChatMigrate moves your conversation to Claude, Gemini, or Grok in one click.

OpenAI made one of its biggest free-tier changes ever this week: starting August 6, 2026, free and Go accounts no longer have a rate limit on text-only prompts. The old free cap — roughly 10 messages every 5 hours before being dropped to a mini model — is gone for plain text.

Read the fine print, though. The change covers text-only prompts. Attaching files or images to a prompt, generating images, and voice mode all keep their separate limits. And unlimited messages does not mean unlimited flagship access — heavy free usage still gets served by smaller models, while Plus keeps priority on GPT-5.5's full tier at around 160 messages every 3 hours.

So the practical experience for a free power user becomes: you can keep chatting forever, but the quality floor drops when you lean on it hard, and the moment your workflow needs a PDF, a screenshot, or a generated image, you are back at a wall.

That makes August 2026 the best time yet to run a multi-provider setup on free tiers. Claude, Gemini, and Grok each have their own free allowances with their own reset windows and their own strengths — Gemini in particular remains generous with long-context work, and Grok 4.5 is aggressively priced across the board.

The catch has always been context: your conversation history lives inside one app. Rotating providers used to mean re-explaining your whole project every time you switched, which cost more time than the limits did.

That is the exact problem ChatMigrate solves. When ChatGPT downgrades you mid-thread or blocks a file upload, one click moves the full conversation — structure intact — into Claude, Gemini, or Grok, and you continue from the same state instead of starting over.

Bottom line: OpenAI's change removes the annoying wall, not the important ones. Unlimited text plus a fast way to hop providers when you need vision, files, or a stronger model is the strongest free AI setup that has ever existed.
